Obama's lead slips to 3 points

By Andrew Quinn 2 hrs 21 mins ago October 19, 2008

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrat Barack Obama's lead over Republican John McCain in the presidential race has dropped to 3 points, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Sunday.

Obama leads McCain by 48 to 45 percent among likely U.S. voters, down 1 percentage point from Saturday. The four-day tracking poll, which has a margin of error of 2.9 points.

Pollster John Zogby said the numbers were good news for McCain, and probably reflected a bump following his appearance in the third and final presidential debate on Wednesday.

"For the first time in the polling McCain is up above 45 percent. There is no question something has happened," Zogby said.

He said the Arizona senator appeared to have solidified his support with the Republican base -- where 9 out of 10 voters now back him -- and was also gaining ground among the independents who may play a decisive role in the November 4 election.

Obama's lead among independent voters dropped to 8 points on Sunday from 16 points a day earlier.

'RED FLAGS'

"If that trend continues, it is something that has got to raise red flags for Obama," Zogby said. "It suggests to me that his outward look of confidence may be as much strategy as it is real."

Other national polls have given Obama a double-digit overall lead, fueled by perceptions he would do a better job managing the faltering economy and unhappiness with McCain's attacks on him over the past week.

But he has cautioned his supporters against overconfidence and most polls now put his lead in single digits.

Obama, 47, who would be the first black president, enjoys strong support among black, Hispanic, Catholic and Jewish voters while the 72-year-old McCain holds a narrower lead among male and white voters.

Women, who are expected to be an important factor in the election, still favor Obama by a 6-point margin, although this has been declining in recent days.

Independent Ralph Nader drew 2 percent support in the poll, conducted Saturday through Tuesday, while Libertarian Bob Barr registered 1 percent, both little changed.

The rolling tracking poll surveyed 1,210 likely voters in the presidential election. In a tracking poll, the most recent day's results are added while the oldest day's results are dropped in an effort to track changing momentum.

The U.S. president is determined not by the most votes nationally but by a majority of the Electoral College, which has 538 members allotted to all 50 states and the District of Columbia in proportion to their representation in Congress.

America loves to root for the underdog!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0j37GpheRg&feature=related

The psychological reasons for America's love of the underdog are beyond the scope of this political post. If you've made up your mind to vote for Sen. Obama then you may want to skip this post. If Sen. McCain is your choice, then you might enjoy this piece.

Some instances, by all means not a comprehensive list, of examples where Americans displayed their love of the underdog:

1. The American revolution: where the less organized patriots defeated the British forces to gain independence for the thirteen colonies.
2. Afghanistan defeated the USSR's army in the 1980's.
3. U.S. President Harry Truman in the 1948 presidential election.
4. Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura's election in 1998.
5. Super Bowl III; NY Jets, Joe Namath defeat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts.
6. 1964: Mohammad Ali defeats Sonny Liston.
7. In 1980, the United States hockey team consisting of amateurs and college players defeated the Olympic hockey superpower, the Soviet Union. The amazing upset was called the "Miracle on Ice".
8. Super Bowl XXXII: 1998 wild card Denver Broncos beat Greenbay Packers.
9. 2004: Boston Red Sox defeat NY Yankees for baseball's World Series.
10. Well, you get the idea.

In an Oct., 16th interview with CBS' news reporter, Maggie Rodriquez, Michelle Obama claimed that her husband Sen. Obama was still the underdog. Inspite of the fact that the night before, CNN had done away with the need for the Nov. 4th election at all, by declaring the polls closed , and proclaiming Obama the victor and new president of the United States. His lead in every poll is expanding, it's projected that he'll win by a record landslide, and still she wants the designation of underdog? It should not be a surprise since being the underdog invokes America's desire to see the underdog win.

I have a hard time seeing Sen. Obama as the underdog: His popularity and meteoric climb to front runner position was launched by TV's billionaire diva, Oprah, on CNN's Larry King Live (May 1st, 2007). Just like Dr. Phil, who got his own TV show, and any author honored by Oprah, success is all but assured. The financial support of 3 of Chicago's wealthiest women, aside from Oprah, easily enabled his campaign to attract additional support (reminds me of the NY Yankees and George Steinbrenner). He has the sleek and smooth gift of gab that personified in the presidency of Slick Willie Clinton. Questions of associations with Dark clouds like Rev. Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, and Chicago characters of less than moral credentials, rather than taint, slide off his persona like he too is coated in Teflon. And remember, Bill Clinton was the first black president, so he can't even claim that distinction. Sen. Obama is seen, and he actively promotes the image, as the Anti-Bush candidate. And with Bush's abysmal record and exceedingly low approval rating , that is no surprise. What does peak my interest though is the Pelosi/Reid Democratic congress of the past two years have even lower approval ratings. America is really unhappy with the current government and most of all with congress. Polosi, Reid, and Obama....hmmmm, could be interesting.

Considering the Bush administration's 8 year debacle, Ruben Studdard could run for president with Tina Fey as his running mate and win against Bush or whoever they deem the Bush surrogate.

No, I have to say that Sen. John McCain is truly the underdog, and has been from the beginning.

1. He's running against the media ordained savior of America.
2. Sen. McCain is seen as George Bush. ( excuse me but Sen. McCain has far more character and integrity than Mr. Bush.)
3. Think albatross here.
4. He's running against an abysmal economy.
5. He's running against old age.
6. He had the unmitigated audacity to appoint a conservative, family oriented female to the VP slot.
7. And what's worse, he was ballsy enough to chose an attractive women. ( why she's almost as pretty as Tina Fey.)
8. Those two items alone put his judgment into question.
9. He supports America's warriors in an unpopular war.
10. He's not Robin Hood, nor is he
11. Santa Claus.

Sen. John McCain is the underdog in this election. I'm sorry he has to stand in the shadow of Geo. Bush. I'm glad he's a conservative and believes in accountability and not free handouts just because you exist. We served in the same war and I respect the fact that he, unlike Bush was true to his military obligation. Asking Obama to be Commander in Chief of the United States Military is like asking a Catholic priest for marital advice. John McCain's age and experience are
vital to extracting the changes we need in Washington and in the world.

The world loves the underdog and hates the top dog. That's why the world hates America. In 1776 c., we were the underdog and now we've became the top dog.
I'm voting for John McCain to keep us Topdog. He exemplifies my values and my morals.

Senator Barack Obama = NY Yankees.

Senator John McCain = Boston Red Sox.

WHY WE LIKE SARAH PALIN

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

She’s genuine.

That in itself is quite a novelty not to be discovered that readily in DC.

She’s intelligent, articulate, persevering and accomplished. That totally enrages the liberals.

She’s a committed mother and loving wife—though feminists despise both.

She’s a public servant who does what she says—puts the people first, puts ethics above politics and puts the crooks to shame. Liberals know they are nowhere near her league.

She’s a talented woman—superb debater, substantive speaker, gifted administrator. Compare that with the
inept Congress.

She’s already set an admirable track record in public life, working from honest motives rather than the usual double-speak manipulation that has crazed DC
for decades. Honesty in DC just doesn’t work in the main. No wonder she scares them stiff.

She’s impressive, humorous, feminine, and individualistic—all at the same time. The reason? Again, she’s genuine. No fake mold.

Thank God she’s not Nancy Pelosiesque or Hillary Clintonesque. Thank God’s she’s on the other end of the spectrum from Gloria Steinam and Whoopi Goldberg.

She’s in real-life real-time with the rest of America’s hard-working citizens. In other words, she is one of us in comparison to the DC cliques that have craftily removed themselves into safe havens of one sort or another.

She’s an enigma to the liberals, particularly the press. They simply don’t know what to do with her.

In the Vice Presidential debate, she drew a viewership higher than any other since 1992. Viewers did not watch because of Joe. They sat riveted because of Sarah.

But what then could the liberal press do but praise her a smidgen in order to appear civil while saving their sharper knife blades for further down their columns. Some even started out with their journalistic sword swinging. That’s how upset Sarah can make the liberal pen.

Conservative, truly patriotic journalists were fair in calling Sarah Palin the debate winner for in fact she was.

How interesting that Drudge Report poll tallied on Friday at 4:25 PM the following:

Joe Biden with 28%, voters totaling 147,012

Sarah Palin with 70%, voters totaling 362,270.

Total votes were 518,963.

Liberal TIME’s website poll tallied only 18,398 total with, of course, Biden out in front.

Compare 516,797 with 18,398. Drudge and Sarah hit home runs big time.

In other words, Sarah Palin is ready to take on DC in January.

Todd Palin visited Scheel's Sporting Goods in Morehead, Minnesota Friday. The crowd of about 200, packed into the store, cheered and waved McCain signs as well as bumper stickers with the words, “Read my lipstick: McCain-Palin ’08.”

Todd said, "I know John and Sarah will work to get the government back into the people’s hands,”
and went on to tell us that Alaskans share a lot of common interests with Minnesotans. “hunting and fishing and, of course, our Second Amendment rights.”

"I know Sen. McCain and my wife will continue to fight for those Second Amendment rights with your support,” he said.

Finally, he told us to nevermind the critics that say Sarah, as a woman and mother, can't do the job. "She’s been told that in every job that she’s had, running for Mayor, they told her you can’t do it because you’ve got Bristol, Track and Willow. So, any female that puts herself into politics is always going to have that criticism and so, she’s faced challenges before and at the end of the day, she always proves them wrong."

My adult daughters were pretty impressed.
